University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Data
Each month, the University of Michigan releases consumer sentiment data that is viewed as the best indicator on the strength of the consumer.
Institutions and other traders look at this data very closely to get a sense of the buying power of consumers, which effects retail and other discretionary stocks.
Numbers to Watch
Our reading last month showed 76.9 and markets are expecting that number again this month.
Anything above 76.9 can lift markets (especially consumer discretionary XLY) and anything below it can trigger selling.
You can see that the consumer has been getting stronger since mid 2022 but we have yet to reach pre-COVID levels still.
