PCE Data Tomorrow
PCE data is due at 8:30 AM ET tomorrow.
PCE represents Personal Consumption Expenditures. Similarly to CPI, it is a measure of the change in prices that consumers pay for goods and services.
Therefore, it is another way for us to see how inflation has changed from month to month.
PCE Estimates
Here are the key numbers you need to know:
Core PCE - previous: 0.2%
Core PCE - projected: 0.2%
What Is the Difference Between PCE and CPI?
PCE and CPI are similar measures, but are calculated based on different categories.
Whereas PCE indexes highly on healthcare services and housing, CPI indexes highly on shelter. See below for a full breakout of how each are measured.
CPI and PCE are Diverging
Something interesting to note is that we are seeing the greatest divergence between CPI and PCE in over 20 years.
Based on the chart below, we can see that the reading for CPI - PCE is at its highest point.
This gives us insight into which categories are seeing inflation, and which are not. Since CPI is weighted heavily on shelter, it is likely that inflation is hitting this area harder than areas where PCE indexes highly, like healthcare services.
